Shiatsu

WHAT IS SHIATSU? Shiatsu is a form of bodywork where the person receiving the treatment remains clothed and no oil is used for the massage. The treatment takes place on a futon on the floor and usually takes just under an hour. It is exceptionally relaxing and therapeutic.

IS IT A FORM OF ACUPRESSURE? It is sometimes described as acupuncture without the needles (acupressure), but this is not strictly true. Although it uses the meridians (energy channels) rhythmic and gradual pressure can be specifically applied over acupuncture points or wider areas of the body using palms, elbows, knees and feet. The application of pressure is the underlying principle of shiatsu – Shiatsu literally means finger (shi) pressure (atsu).

IS IT LIKE PHYSIOTHERAPY? Shiatsu is much more than just using pressure on the body, it makes use of some modern physiotherapy techniques, such as gentle stretching and manipulation techniques; and occasional ‘holding’ with the palms like the laying on of hands in hands-on healing. These stretching exercises and adjusting techniques create flexibility and balance in the body, both energetically and physically.

DOES IT AFFECT YOUR ENERGY? Shiatsu works on the flow of energy or Qi that circulates through our bodies in specific energy channels or meridians. This "life force" or "life energy" creates our physical structure and regulates physical, emotional, mental and spiritual stability, and maintains a homeostatic balance in your body.

The flow of energy can often be disturbed either through internal trauma such as stress or depression, or by external trauma, such as an accident or a shock. The effects of these can cause aches and pain which is the beginning of a state of "dis-ease" in the body. Shiatsu uses physical touch to assess the distribution of energy throughout the body and uses various its techniques to correct any imbalances accordingly.

WHAT OTHER TECHNIQUES DOES IT USE? Touch is the essence of shiatsu. We all respond to touch which helps to trigger the self-healing process within. Shiatsu incorporates a mixture of different approaches – both ancient and modern, all of which are common aspects of touch, which is the essence of Shiatsu.

Shiatsu is a very safe and effective treatment.
