Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a psychotherapeutic complimentary medicine tool based on the understanding that 85% of all physical illness is caused by unresolved emotional issues. Tapping on certain acupuncture points while focusing and verbally acknowledging the issue affects the body’s energy field in a rebalancing way, restoring it to an harmonious balance. EFT relieves many psychological and physical conditions, including depression, stress, phobias, addictions, and anxiety.
BACKGROUND: EFT was created by Gary Craig in the mid 1990s, and is considered to be both a simplification and an improvement of Roger Callahan's Thought Field Therapy (TFT) techniques. Craig streamlined existing tapping techniques into a tool of simplicity that even children can learn – and they do.
THEORY: The theory behind EFT maintains that negative emotions materialize through the following stages:
-
A negative experience occurs;
-
The negative emotions are felt in response to this negative experience, which creates an imbalance in the programming inside the body;
-
Causing the body's energy system to be disrupted because of these negative emotions.
EFT argues that in order to remove these negative responses, it is not enough to tackle the negative experience, because doing so does not correct the energy imbalance. Rather, the energy imbalance must be restored along with curing the negative emotions.
EFT uses a combination of Acupuncture points (tapping them), Applied Kinesiology (to measure the intensity of the emotion – before, during and after the tapping) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP - to re-programme the information to our energetic fields).
The basic EFT technique involves holding a dissonant memory or emotion in mind while simultaneously tapping a number of Acupuncture points in sequence (this sequence covers all issues) – thus releasing the emotion associated with that memory, and along with the NLP re-programmes the information going to body’s energetic field, it restores the energy body to balance.
RENEE’S EXPERIENCE: EFT, developed by Gary Craig, a Stanford Engineer, has given the world, yes, the world, a great gift to humankind.
It is so simple – it can be learned in 15 minutes to half an hour. Just focus on the thing that’s giving you the problem, acknowledge the emotion connected with it, and tap with your fingers on special meridian points on the face. (There are other points to tap but for the beginner this is usually enough) That’s all it takes to learn this technique that proves THERE CAN BE GAIN WITHOUT PAIN and once learned you can use it for anything throughout your life.
It is accepted now that unresolved emotional issues cause 85% of all physical illness. And that includes all those we have refused (consciously or otherwise) to deal with. Emotions are like that but if we ignore them they will pop up to bite us when we least expect it. Yes. We ignore our emotions at our peril.
I once found myself caught in an unexpected pea-soup fog on the top of a mountain. I couldn’t see a thing and found it almost impossible to drive at all. There is a great similarity between the pea-soup fog out there and what I call the pea-soup fogs that floats in us – just between the ears!
Though we may all be competent drivers if we are caught in an unexpected pea-soup fog on the top of a mountain (which happened to me once) we lose our vision and find it almost impossible to drive at all.
Though we may be fairly well balanced and clear headed and live a normal life, when something comes into our life that either shocks or distresses us we are like that -caught in a fog, not able to see the road, not knowing which way to turn.
Dark emotions like anger, resentment, sadness, hurt, feelings of rejection, etc. have the same effect on us as the fog on the mountain. We can’t see clearly, don’t know which way to turn. This is where EFT comes into its own:
Recognise the problem;
-
Verbally acknowledge it, and
-
Tap on it.
It’s as simple as 1, 2, 3.
I have seen it totally heal a problem that has been embedded in the emotions, or in the body, since early childhood.
Nothing can compare to the joy in seeing the relaxed and smiling face of the person who arrived with such a heavy burden a short time earlier.
To their own astonishment they say, “I feel so light” “I never saw it (the problem) like that before.” “I understand it now”.
This amazing metamorphosis takes place, initially, by tapping very gently on seven points on the face whilst acknowledging whatever the particular problem is and focussing on it.
Try it once, and see for yourself.
